Thailand Island Hopping — Routes, Ferries and Timing
Thailand has two separate island systems, and mixing them up is the most common planning mistake. This guide covers which islands actually connect, realistic crossing times, and how to build an itinerary that doesn't waste days in transit.
Two coasts, two seasons
The Andaman side (Phuket, Krabi, Koh Lanta, Koh Phi Phi, Koh Lipe) is best from November to April. The Gulf side (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao) is best from January to September. They are not connected by ferry — moving between them means a bus, a flight or a long overland day.
Planning both coasts in a 10-day trip usually costs you two full travel days. Pick one coast unless you have three weeks.
Andaman routes worth building around
- Phuket → Koh Phi Phi: 2 hours by large ferry, several departures a day.
- Krabi (Ao Nang) → Koh Phi Phi: 1.5–2 hours, fewer departures outside high season.
- Krabi → Koh Lanta: 2 hours by boat, or 2.5 hours by minivan and bridge — the road option runs all year.
- Phuket → Koh Lipe: full day via Pak Bara, only reliable November to April.
Gulf routes worth building around
- Koh Samui → Koh Phangan: 30–45 minutes, the easiest hop in Thailand.
- Koh Phangan → Koh Tao: 1–1.5 hours by high-speed catamaran.
- Surat Thani → Koh Samui: 1.5–2.5 hours depending on the boat; train-and-ferry combinations from Bangkok are cheap and comfortable.
Practical rules that save a day
- Book the first boat of the day for any onward connection — afternoon crossings get cancelled first when the sea builds.
- Never plan a same-day island-to-airport flight with less than four hours of margin.
- Ferries take cash for extras and often for the pier fee; keep small notes handy.
- Motion sickness is real on speedboats — the large slow ferry is calmer and only marginally slower.
- Install your eSIM before the crossing; pier wifi is unusable and schedules change by SMS.
A route that works
Ten days, Gulf side: two nights Bangkok, overnight train south, four nights Koh Samui, three nights Koh Phangan, fly home from Samui. Let the trip planner turn that into dated days with transport in place.

Frequently asked questions
Can I take a ferry from Phuket to Koh Samui?
No — they are on opposite coasts with no ferry link. The realistic options are a 1-hour flight or a full day by bus and boat.
How long is the ferry from Koh Samui to Koh Phangan?
30–45 minutes. It is the easiest and shortest island hop in Thailand, with frequent daily departures.
Which Thai islands are on the same ferry network?
Andaman coast islands (Phuket, Krabi, Koh Lanta, Koh Phi Phi, Koh Lipe) connect to each other by ferry, as do Gulf coast islands (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao). The two networks do not connect to each other.
How far ahead should I book ferries in Thailand?
A day or two is enough outside December to February and Songkran. During those peak periods, book the exact crossing you need about a week ahead.
Are ferries in Thailand often cancelled?
In shoulder and monsoon months, yes — afternoon speedboat crossings are usually cancelled first when the sea builds. Keep one buffer night before any international flight.
What is the best season for Andaman coast islands versus Gulf coast islands?
The Andaman side (Phuket, Krabi, Koh Phi Phi, Koh Lipe) is best November to April. The Gulf side (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao) is best January to September — the two seasons run in opposite cycles.
